it <br /> i <br /> The locations of monitoring wells (borings) are shown on <br /> Plate 1. Boring E-1 was drilled and the well installed at the <br /> mouth of the east valley. The boring penetrated the outwash <br /> deposits, and at the depth of 43 feet below the surface , it <br /> encountered Mancos Shale. The log of the boring is presented <br /> on Plate 1. About 10 feet east of boring E-1, a shallow boring <br /> (25.5 feet deep) was drilled to perform the falling head test. <br /> The boring is not indicated on the map as its location closely <br /> coincides with boring E-1. <br /> Boring W-1 was drilled and a monitoring well installed <br /> in the lower part of the west valley. Boring W-1 also <br /> penetrated the outwash deposits, and at the depth of 47 feet, <br /> it encountered Mancos Shale. The log of the boring is shown on <br /> Plate 1. ` <br /> Field permeability tests, using the Falling Head Method, <br /> were performed in all installed monitoring wells . <br /> All monitoring wells have been used for the monitoring <br /> of ground water levels and to obtain samples for chemical <br /> analyses of ground water . <br /> I <br /> 5. 0 DATA ON GROUND WATER <br /> } <br /> I5. 1 Geology of Water Bearing Strata <br /> ' As only ground water present in outwash sediments is of <br />` concern to the proposed study, the following description of <br /> t ground water conditions in this formation will be dealt with. <br /> L As can be seen from the boring logs , the outwash <br /> deposits have a character of silty clays in the upper part of <br /> all borings and of clayey gravels in the lower part of the <br /> borings. The upper clays are silty, grey to brown , with fre- <br /> quent fragments of sandstone and shale. The lower clayey <br /> gravel consists mostly of shale fragments in wet, grey clay. <br /> The angular character of shale fragments indicates a short <br /> Clength of transport. <br /> 5.2 Depth to Water <br /> Ground water is present in the lower part of the 'outwash <br /> deposits , composed of clayey gravels 15 to 28 feet thick. <br />" However , even the lower part of the outwash deposits, com- <br /> posed of silty clay, is partially saturated . <br /> 16 <br /> GEO-HYDRO CONSULTING,INC. ! <br />
