SITE CONDT 10iTS
r
GENERAL
The Mine 1 and 2 areas are formed on excavated rock surfaces which
are inclined toward the highwall at 2 to 10 per cent slopes parallel to
the plane of the westerly dipping coal seam. The pad area surfaces are
composed of loose, fractured sandstone and shale bedrock of the Mancos
Formation, coal spoil and excavated bedrock waste piles. Each pad area
has been notched into very steep mountainous terrain with average natural
undisturbed slopes that range from 70 to 100 per cent and occasionally
in excess of 45 degrees. Disturbance of even small areas of 0.1 acres
involve large exposures of barren slopes that are difficult to vegetate
over extended time periods. Many slope areas are stable with a mint-mum
apparent factor of safety.
KILIZNLMER1 - PALD1
Mine number 1 pad area includes 2.38 acres of both excavated and fill
surface. The pad surface is irregularly inclined south at 10 to 15 per
cent grade. Pad width averages 60 feet and ranges in width from 40 feet
to 100 feet. (Plate i an4 Plate 2)
The mine highwall extends up to 50 feet above the mine portal at
70 to 80 degree slopes.
Drainage areas upstream from the mine include approximately 13.97
acres of undisturbed land. Much of the steeply sloping land is ravine
with active avalanches in the printer.
Sediment and drainage control structures have not been constructed
for this mine portal.
-3-
27
