Chapter II
e. Old Refuse Pile- Topsoil.
For reclamation of the old refuse pile, 45,152 cubic yards of combined A and B
horizon material has been spread over the pile at depths of 6" to 12" between
1977-1987. All available A and B horizon material which could be found in the area
has been used for the purpose.
6. Overburden.
As defined under 1.04(83) of the regulations, overburden is not applicable to the
Mid-Continent operations.
1.04 (83) "Overburden"means for surface coal mining activities, materials of any
nature, consolidated or unconsolidated, that overlies a coal deposit, excluding
topsoil.
Materials which were excavated in construction of the Adit/Rock Tunnel are covered
under Section II-B-9 as underground development waste.
7. Coal Handling Structures.
a. Adit/Rock Tunnel to Load-out.
Conveyor belts are used extensively in the Mid-Continent operations. See Exhibit
II-B-7.
Coal is transported from the working face through one entry of the Adit/Rock Tunnel
via conveyor belt. The belt carries the coal out the portal of the Adit/Rock Tunnel
and overland to the raw coal stockpile(s), where it is deposited.
The overland conveyor system which carries coal from the mine to the Preparation
Plant is a covered belt, 48" wide, which extends 5,350'. The segment of the
overland conveyor system which extends from the Adit/Rock Tunnel to the first
transfer is 3600' long; the segment extending to the M-bed coal stockpile is 350'
long; to the B-bed coal stockpile is 650' long.
The section extending over the tunnel yard is elevated on trusses and bents. The
section from the transfer point to the M-bed storage pile is elevated, on trusses,
over the road.
The overland conveyor is covered, to minimize dust emissions, and the belt itself is
turned in order to prevent coal falling on the ground beneath.
36
