Chapter II
This was a relocation of an existing power line, which was done for better access,
and improved tree clearance, one of three minor revisions, approved during the
preceding permit term (1983-88), to relocate sections of the power line system in
order to facilitate the modernization program. The lines were relocated, as
approved in the revisions. They are:
Sept. 18, 1984. The minor revision was approved for relocation of a section of the
No. 5 powerline at the preparation plant to in order to remove it from any conflict
with the new Sutey refuse pile conveyor. Mid-Continent moved the line to alleviate
congestion of power line, conveyor belts and ponds behind the preparation plant.
The line was moved westerly, up the hill.
March 19, 1985. The minor revision allowed relocation of a powerline which ran
through the new area designated for alternate coal storage.
July 2, 1986. MR-3. The revision allowed for replacement of the power line from the
substation to the Adit/Rock Tunnel, with the new route to parallel the overland
conveyor route.
(2) Methane Gas Pipeline.
Methane gas which is liberated during the mining process is used as fuel for the
preparation plant thermal dryers. Usage is determined by availability.
The gas is collected underground in the mine and then piped to the surface to a
Methane Drainage and Compressor House, located at the portal area of Main Entry
#1. The gas is then piped approximately three miles downhill to the dryers. The
pipe is four inches in diameter. It is buried, and the pipeline right-of-way has been
successfully reclaimed, with a good vegetative cover established. Exhibit II-13-4 b &
d. Prior to construction, a special use permit was obtained from the U.S. Forest
Service for that portion of the pipeline route which crosses forest service lands.
h. Sewage Treatment.
A septic tank and leach field, adjacent to the office, bathhouse and training center
are designed to treat contaminated effluent, and permitted by the Pitkin County
sanitarian.
Shower water from the bathhouse drains to the pond located east of Dutch Creek.
The pond has been permitted by the Colorado Department of Health and EPA. The
NPDES designation is Pond #03. A septic tank and leach field have also been
installed, south of the road, for the Adit/Rock Tunnel lamphouse facility.
1.
