Neilson and Mr. Ware, it is believed that the facility generated <br /> and disposed of the following waste streams: <br /> general garbage from the office and industrial <br /> manufacturing operations; <br /> solid wastes (paper, boxes, metal, and fugitive dust) ; <br /> potentially hazardous liquid waste, consisting of <br /> petroleum based lubricants, waste oil, compressor <br /> blowdown, and minor amounts of solvents; <br /> a sma l r amount of sewage. <br /> The following subsections detail R.D. Piland and Associates <br /> Consultants' understanding of Pitkin Iron's waste handling, <br /> storage, and disposal practices. <br /> 4.8.2 Waste Handling and Storage <br /> Most wastes produced from the crushing, drying, and bagging <br /> operations were associated with the large amounts of compressed <br /> air needed for the dust collectors. Compressed air was required <br /> to move the rock dust through the plant. Thus, the compressors <br /> were running whenever product was being processed. The excess oil <br /> from the compressor blowdown was collected into containers for <br /> disposal, but it appears that the blowdown was not always fully <br /> contained and spills have contaminated approximately 1200 square <br /> feet of surface soils in two places outside of the main building <br /> (Photograph 22) (Figure 3) . Based on interviews with personnel, <br /> the waste oil was routinely stored in drums. It is not apparent <br /> how much waste oil might have been produced or how much might <br /> have spilled on to the ground. Other waste oil of unknown origin <br /> is stored on site in open top 5 gallon cans. There are at least <br /> five 5 gallon cans of waste oil and approximately 10 partially <br /> full drums of oil stored both inside and outside of the two <br /> process buildings (Photograph 23) . <br /> Most solid wastes were collected in a dumpster and subsequently <br /> hauled to the county landfill; however, some of the wastes were <br /> disposed of in two piles on the property. <br /> 4.8.3 Waste Disposal <br /> Waste Water <br /> Only small quantities of waste water were generated as sewage <br /> from the employee bathroom and showers. This waste water flowed <br /> directly into the septic tank and leachfield located on the <br /> property. <br /> 20 <br />
