The primary components of the operation within the affected area consist of the quarry utility portal
entry driven by CYMC in 1990, three large historic quarry entries from earlier operations, a quarry
discharge system, access roads, and marble waste piles. There also exists a 10,000 gallon diesel fuel tank
and a semi - trailer mounted diesel - electric generator on the site. There is also a propane tank and heater
to allow warmer air into the mine for the workers. These tanks and structures can all be seen on Map C-
2.
CSQ has installed two ventilators in Portal #3 (South Portal) to push fresh air into the underground
quarry. The Portal #3 entry will be closed by a wall to control the air and eventually the two other
historic entries will be walled for the same reason and also to prevent any access to the quarry. The
anticipated closure date is 2060, giving a mine life of 50 years.
Following Golder's advice, CSQ has stopped public access to the quarry for safety and security reasons.
The large waste blocks have been placed on the slopes in the permit area for decades. Dried fines have
also been placed around the large blocks and on the roads. Fines were detected in Yule Creek in 2007 by
DRMS. In order to better manage run -off and prevent sediment from entering Yule Creek, a sediment
control plan has been developed by Greg Lewicki and Associates. This plan can be seen in sub - section
three, located below.
Furthermore, particularly if the dip of the deposit is proven to evolve towards 25 degrees instead of a
much steeper grade, it will become feasible within the next 20 years of production to start filling the old
workings with fines and some waste blocks. A large part of the waste will then be kept underground and
will be a white marble reserve for future use as landscape chips or other uses.
There are no improvements or new roads envisioned for access to the affected area. Access is via 3
miles of public road from the Town of Marble, and then via 1,800 ft of private property on Colorado
Stone controlled private property to the northern edge of affected area. An access road on site already
exists from prior operations. The waste piles are porous so during heavy rainfall or spring snow melt
Yule Quarry April 2012 15
