in Tab 21 (Minesoil Reconstruction) since these three sample sites do not occur within the
projected disturbance area. PCL also had slightly higher saturation percentage values.
A loss on ignititon (Total Organic Carbon-TOC) organic matter test was performed on upper
horizons of all Haplaquolls for comparison with Walkley-Black method organic matter
results. As expected, TOC values were higher than Walkley-Black although not high enough
for the Haploquoll soils to meet criteria for inclusion in the Histosol soil order.
Suitability of Soils for Topsoiling. An evaluation of each soil series and soil family's
suitability as a topsoil resource is provided in Appendix 9-5-5, Evaluation of Topsoil
Suitability. Each soil type was evaluated by individual sampled horizons for significant
physical and chemical parameters presented previously in Table 9-5-2. The range of
characteristics for each soil type (presented in Appendix 9-5-3) was also evaluated. A
summary of restrictive features for each sampled pedon, as well as recommended first lift
and second lift topsoil salvage depths for each sampled profile, is included. The volume
of topsoil available for reclamation is presented in the Topsoil Management Plan section
of Tab 21 (Minesoil Reconstruction). The topsoil handling plan for prime farmland soil is
also presented in the Topsoil Management Plan section of Tab 21 (Minesoil Reconstruction).
9-5-28 Revised 08/19/88
