lists the applicable map unit number, sample numbers, and related information concerning
SCS official soil series descriptions. The SCS descriptions are for the series only, not
the three families of the Haplaquoll great group or the disturbed phases of the Barx
series. The soil series mapped on the Nucla East study area are all established series
(E).
Copies of the SCS Official Soil Series Descriptions, accompanying "Form 5" Soil
Interpretation Records, and profile descriptions of all 72 auger hole soil observations,
are on file at PCC's Western Division office in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Soil series descriptions are provided in Appendix 9-5-3, Soil Profile Descriptions for all
Sampled Pedons, and identify the morphology of representative soil profiles on the study
area. Series descriptions were obtained from sampled soil pedons and have been correlated
with their analytical results as well as with SCS soil series criteria to the extent
applicable. Each soil map unit has a soil landscape photograph. All photographs are
on file at PCC's Division Office in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Soil Laboratory Results. The results of laboratory analysis of all soil samples collected
during the 1987 and 1988 soil surveys are provided in Appendix 9-5-4, Soil Laboratory
Data. A detailed discussion of the chemical and physical properties of each soil type is
included in the Topsoil Management Plan section of Tab 21 (Minesoil Reconstruction).
Inter-Mountain Laboratory (IML) routinely reruns about 10 percent of all samples as part
of the quality assurance program. In addition, reruns are performed on certain parameters
significant to soil classification or for which the initial data was either borderline or
suspect. Rerun values were very similar to original values. For quality control, six
samples were also sent to Peabody Central Laboratory (PCL) in Freeburg, Illinois for
either partial or complete analysis. All replication data values are presented in
Appendix 9-5-4, Soil Laboratory Data.
Data values between labs were generally quite similar, with the following differences
noted. PCL had paste pH values, on average, 0.3 units higher than IML. No particular
reason for this discrepancy can be found at this time. This difference is sufficient to
change the first lift/second lift suitability interpretation for three Barx samples (Site
7), one Mivida sample (Site 9), and one Bowdish sample (Site 40). However, this 0.3 unit
pH discrepancy will not influence first lift/second lift topsoil handling plans presented
9-5-27 Revised 08/19/88
