first lift topsoil salvage depth recommendation. The second topsoil salvage depth
recommendation is based on an average depth of all soil material that meets threshold
suitability levels for Lift 2 as described in Table 9-5-2. All soil profile descriptions
and sampled pedon laboratory data for each soil series were evaluated. Unsuitable rated
soil material (material which exceed Lift 2 threshold suitability levels) was not
recommended for salvage.
These suitability evaluations, based on averages across the study area, were used for
topsoil volume determinations presented in the Topsoil Management Plan section of Tab 21
(Minesoil Reconstruction). The number of profiles on which these averages are based is
noted in the Soil Profile descriptions range of characteristics. The recommended topsoil
salvage depths for each map unit are weighted averages of each major component of the map
unit (those listed in the map unit name - for both consociations and complexes) as well as
major soil inclusions as presented within the map units.
Results/Discussion
Soil Survey Maps. The distribution of each map unit on the Nucla East study area is
provided on 1"=400' scale black and white aerial photo and topographic base maps (dated
10-22-87) accompanying this report (Exhibits 9-3 and 9-6, respectively).
Typifying soil pedons (soil sample locations), as well as all 72 soil profile description
locations are denoted on Exhibit 9-6. A Soil Profile Descriptions List is provided as
Table 9-5-3. A complete legend, which identifies all mapping unit symbols is provided on
each map as well .
Soil Horizon Nomenclature. Revised soil series profile descriptions were available from
SCS for all soil series mapped on the Nucla East study area. These revised descriptions
incorporated the new soil horizon nomenclature. This nomenclature was also used for all
72 soil profile descriptions completed during the PCC Nucla East soil survey.
Soil Series Correlation. Correlation of site-specific soils with SCS soil series criteria
was completed. All soils, except for Haplaquolls and the disturbed phases of Barx, were
established series and correlated easily. Individual soil series names were not available
for the Haplaquolls mapped on the study area. No new soil series names were proposed as
part of this survey.
9-5-18 Revised 04/11/88
