Peter O' Connor
July 6, 1987
Page 3
Large Mammals. Studies will consist of general
reconnaisance, interviews with local conservation officers
and residents, and a literature search to document species
of potential occurrence, heavy-use areas, and hunter
exploitation. A Black-footed Ferret survey will be
conducted because of the presence of prairie dog colonies in
the study area.
Fishes. Studies will consist of general reconnaisance of
ponds and streams.
Peabody tentatively plans to submit a Permit Application
Package (PAP) in the late fall of 1987. Consequently, the
spring sampling activities were completed during the last
ten days of May. The methods proposed herein were followed.
A fall sampling effort is scheduled for mid-September. In
addition, a winter survey for raptors will be necessary.
This may necessitate submitting the winter survey results as
a supplement to the PAP should the PAP be submitted prior to
completion of the winter field work.
Peabody believes that the fish and wildlife studies
described herein are sufficient to describe the baseline
conditions in the Nucla East study area. This conclusion is
based upon consideration of the size of the study area, its
location relative to large tracts of natural habitat, the
fragmented nature of the habitat blocks in the study area,
and the prevailing agricultural land use practices which
occur on the majority of the area. Also, greater
quantitative emphasis has been placed on taxa where
potential impacts are perceived to be the greatest (breeding
birds) , protected species (Eagles and Ferrets) , and
economically important species (upland game birds) .
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the studies
that are outlined, do not hesitate to contact Jim Lunan or
me.
Respectfully,
Brian P. Dunfee
Manager
Environmental Studies
bd
