for the Nucla East mining area approximate the original premining contours.
Topsoil material will exhibit infiltration rates generally similar to premining soils. At
the Nucla Mine, established reclaimed areas have been disked and adequately reseeded, and
future reclaimed areas in both mining areas will be manipulated mechanically using chisel
plowing and ripping of graded and topsoiled areas in combination with timely reseeding to
minimize overland flow rates and volumes.
Surface Water Monitoring. Peabody has installed a network of surface water monitoring
sites in irrigation laterals, at sediment structure discharge sites (NPDES), in
tributaries to Tuttle and Calamity Draws, and in the main channels of Tuttle and Calamity
Draws. Monitoring instrumentation, parameters, and monitoring frequencies are described
in detail in Tab 15, Hydrologic Monitoring Program. The Surface Water Monitoring Plan
employed to monitor the extent and magnitude of any mining impacts is discussed in Tab 18,
Hydrologic Reclamation Plan.
The surface water monitors will be maintained for the life of the mining operation or
until such a time as CMLRD may agree that they are no longer necessary. All surface water
monitoring installations will be removed upon completion of the postmining phase of the
Hydrologic Monitoring Program.
All surface water data collected at each monitoring site in each future water year will be
compiled and submitted to the CMLRD in the form of the Nucla Annual Hydrology Report (AHR)
within three months after the end of each water year. Future AHRs will include copies of
quarterly NPDES discharge monitoring reports for each NPDES monitoring site submitted to
the Colorado Department of Health during the same water year.
Stream Buffer Zones
The stream buffer zone along Calamity Draw (land within 100 feet of a perennial stream or
stream with a biological community as defined by Section 4.05.18(3) of the CMLRD
regulations) will be affected by associated disturbance activities within the Nucla East
area (see Exhibit 12-3). The mining and operations plan for Nucla East has been developed
so that there will be no disturbance to the main channel of Calamity Draw. Disturbance
within the buffer zone will be limited and will consist of activities related to the
construction of a drainage ditch (spreading excess excavated soil material) that will
16-7 Revised 08/19/88
