Peabody will conduct annual spring and seep surveys during the dry periods of the year,
early spring or late fall . The results of the annual spring and seep surveys will be
reported in the Annual Hydrology Report for Nucla and Nucla East.
As mining progresses at Nucla Mine, or begins at the proposed Nucla East mining area, the
monitoring program will be reduced or expanded as necessary to properly track any impacts
that may occur as a result of mining. As any changes occur at Nucla and Nucla East, they
will be reflected as minor revisions to the existing permit. The above described on-going
ground water monitoring program for the entire Nucla operation updates the existing
monitoring program as described in the 1987 Annual Hydrology Report.
Postmining Ground Water Monitoring Program. Upon completion of mining at Nucla Mine in
1989, a postmining monitoring program will be implemented. Peabody will consult with the
CMLRD prior to implementation of the program.
Proposed Additional Monitoring Sites
Peabody proposes additions to the ground and surface water monitoring program for the
Nucla and Nucla East mining areas to address three concerns. First, further resolution of
potentiometric surfaces and ground water quality fluxes, particularly to the south and
west, is desired. Second, a means of monitoring the alluvial aquifer in Tuttle Draw is
needed. Finally, additional ground and surface water monitoring in the immediate vicinity
of the Nucla East pits will provide input to assist in the refinement of the estimates of
impact to water rights proximate to the area.
The first two concerns are proposed to be addressed by the installation of six monitor
wells: 1) one in the alluvium; 2) three in the overburden; 3) one in the coal; and 4) one
in the underburden. These wells are denoted on Exhibit 7-1 as open circles. The third
concern is to be addressed by five proposed piezometers and one proposed surface water
monitoring site, which will be installed in two phases. The three piezometers and one
surface water monitor, located immediately adjacent to the first three years of mining
disturbance at Nucla East, are proposed to be completed sometime during the first three
years of mining. The other two piezometers are proposed to be completed during the fourth
or fifth years of mining.
The five piezometers, shown as open circles with center dots on Exhibit 7-1, will be
15-22 Revised 04/11/88
