INTRODUCTION
Sediment Pond 005 is an earthen embankment structure constructed by
Peabody Coal Company in the mid-1970's as a temporary sediment structure
to control runoff and sediment from the disturbed areas of the Nucla
Mine. Sediment Pond 005 is located in Section 36 of Township 47 North,
Range 16 West, Northwest of the town of Nucla, Colorado (see Exhibit
13-4) .
INSPECTION
On July 8, 1986, engineers from Peabody's Compliance Engineering
Department inspected Sediment Pond No. 005. The purpose of this
inspection was to assess the safety and general condition of the
structure with respect to the regulations of the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Division (CMLRD). As a result of this inspection, it was
determined that the storage capacity of No. 005 was inadequate. It is
Peabody's intention to repair these deficiencies in accordance with the
remedial compliance plan contained in this report.
SITE DESCRIPTION
LAND USE
Sediment Pond No. 005 has a 31-acre watershed that is tributary to
Tuttle Draw. This watershed is classified as approximately 58 percent
reclaimed and 42 percent undisturbed upland sagebrush-grass.
EMBANKMENT
The existing embankment is a homogeneous earth fill . The top width of
the embankment is a minimum 12 feet wide with upstream and downstream
slopes of approximately 2H:1V, respectively. The existing spillway
consists of an 12-foot wide, trapezoidal channel .
1
