State Reg. Federal Reg.
CULTURAL RESOURCES
2.04.4 INTRODUCTION
Western Cultural Resource ManagemerIt,_Inc. (WORM, Inc.) was
contracted by Peabody Coal Company to survey the Nucla Mine
site and publish the following report. WCRM, Inc. found two
aboriginal open campsites (5MN1257 and 5MN1258) containing
chipped and ground stone artifacts and both sites are within
the proposed permit area (see Exhibit 5-1 for location and
page 8 for inventory results) . WORM, Inc. recommends that
neither site be found eligible to the National Register of
Historic Places (see recommendations, page 11) .
In the recommendations and conclusions section, KRM, Inc.
states that both sites found within the permit area have
already received extensive disturbances by farming and
road building. WCRM, Inc. made every effort to record
as many artifacts as possible from both sites.
Site 5MN1257 will be disturbed by mining operations. Due
to the conclusions stated in the report, Peabody Coal Company
is not planning on protecting this site from further disturb-
ance.
Site 5DV1258 will be disturbed by routing a temporary county
road through this area (Exhibit 12-1) . Protection of this area
is not being contemplated for the same reasons as stated above.
Two sites have been identified within a one mile radius of the
mining area (see page 20) . These sites are either aboriginal
open lithic scatters or campsites. Peabody feels that, based
on the report, the Nucla raining operation will not cause further
disturbance to these sites.
5-1 A°'P ^
1GQ.,,
