2.04.4 General Introduction
Tab 5, Cultural Resources, contains reports of cultural
resource investigations conducted by Western Cultural Resource
Management, Inc. (WCRM, Inc.) in 1979 and by Nickens and
Associates in 1986 and 1988.
Cultural resource investigations were conducted by WCRM, Inc.
for inclusion in a permit application submitted in April 1980
and approved in May 1983 as Permit No. C-008-81. Map 2 of the
WCRM, Inc. report and Exhibit 5-1 of Tab 5 identify the areas
encompassed by these investigations.
In March of 1986, Nickens and Associates conducted cultural
resource investigations for an area encompassing proposed
mining areas 2 and 3 in the SEQNEQ of Section 36 (T47NR16W) and
the SW14NW4 of Section 31 (T46NR15W) . Exhibit 12-2 "Operations
Plan" details mining areas 2 and 3 and Figure 1-2 of the report
by Nickens and Associates identifies the study area (see Tract
I) . While these mining areas are located within the current
permit area boundary, cultural resources investigations
were not previously conducted in these areas because mining
related disturbances occurred before the implementation of
SMCRA and the Colorado Permanent Regulatory Program.
In March of 1986 and 1988, Nickens and Associates conducted
cultural resource investigations for areas encompassing the
proposed Nucla East mining area. Exhibit 12-3, Operations Plan
- Nucla East, shows the Nucla East permit area and Figure 1-2
of Addendum 5-1 (March 1986 report) and Figure 1 of Attachment
1 (March 1988 report) identify the study area.
