Just before the west end of the GEC channel reconstruction the
flow was still disappearing about one -half into the ground. The flow in the Thompson culvert was 1.2 in. deep.
The flow had passed the "yellow dot" as your 4 -5 -2012 picture shows, and the flow stopped about 100 ft. from
the old Vento fence. There was considerable pooling of the water.
Using your measurements of the flow at the Mountain Park there is a cross sectional area of 30" X 2" or 60 sq.
in. At the Thompson culvert there is 35.9 sq. in. at 2.5' depth in a 24" radius culvert. This pretty much confirms
my observation that about half the flow is disappearing and I think that it is mostly disappearing prior to the
start of the GEC channel reconstruction. Of course I don't have flow velocities, but both culverts probably are
fairly similar gradients.
However, all of these observations will never answer the real question of whether any of the Newlin Creek flow
is entering the Southfield mine or whether it is essentially now full. Drill hole SF87 -07 suggests that it is full.
You have shown that drill hole NWMW is blocked off at -356 ft. which is above the void.
I want to ask another question again. Randy Acre told us about a roof fall in the 1 North section. When it was
cleared up he could see upward into an old mine void above. Where was that roof fall? Was anything done to
seal that connection? What mine did it break into?
Doug Corley
- -- On Thu, 4/5/12, George Patterson < efcoal(a_; ,-mail com wrote:
From: George Patterson < efcoal2gmail.com >
Subject: Newlin Creek Flow 04 -05 -2012
To: "Janet Binns" < anet. binnsg state. co. us >, "Dr. Corley" < ajjc2att.net >
Date: Thursday, April 5, 2012, 9:43 PM
Janet and Doug
Attached is a photo (04 -05 -2012) of Newlin Creek flowing beyond the point of the DRMS' previous
inspection of 03 -27 -2012 some 750 ft downstream from the Thompson Drive culvert. Note the pink
ribbon markers in the trees marking the inspection site. I walked 400 ft further downstream beyond the
markers, the water flowed onward with no visible reduction in the flow volume.
