Mining Plan
6.4.4 The Mining Plan for the BURTON PIT is as follows:
EXHIBIT "D"
(a), (b), (c),(d) and (e) Mining in the pit will continue on an intermittent basis
over the next seven (7) to ten (10) years. This site contains the best riprap source in
the San Luis Valley. Riprap will be required on several projects that come up in the
area such as bridge replacement, erosion control and flood control projects. At the
projected demand levels for materials needed in the marketing area there is not enough
riprap left on the current permit area to mine. Since the pit needs to be expanded in
order to meet the anticipated demand the conversion from a 110c to 112c is required.
It is planned to continue mining the rock outcrop in a northeasterly direction. Track
drills will be used to drill blast holes to approximate depths of 25 feet. Mining will be
done using a series of benches with the depth of each bench not exceeding 25 feet.
Shot material will be pushed to the south where it will be processed and stockpiled.
Equipment used will include track dozers, rubber -tired loaders, grizzlies and crusher
plants. Excavation of the rock outcrop will remain higher than surrounding ground so
the natural drainage will be maintained. Shot slopes will be approximately 1/2 H: 1V.
Water will only be used in the pit, if necessary, to control dust from the crushing or
haul operations. Water will be hauled to the site by water trucks and the water will be
purchased from the City of Del Norte. Since this area is an existing pit and in the past
topsoil was not removed from plant and stockpile sites it is proposed that unless
significant areas can be stripped of topsoil that the soil be left intact. It is felt that
removal at this time would result in significant contamination and would be
impossible to remove prior to mining operation due to the inaccessibility with
equipment of the remaining topsoil.
(i)
The operation of this mine will not be carried out in phases. The operation of
this pit does not lend itself to a phased operation, however I t will be benched
as mining occurs which is the phase portion of this mine. Each phase will
repeat the steps below.
The initial preparation of the surface before extraction of the rock is nil as
stated previously due to the nature of the rock outcrop being mined. Any
available topsoil (growth medium) will be salvaged and stockpiled for use later
during the reclamation process. Front -end loaders, and dozers or any other
suitable surface equipment will be used.
