in the middle reaches of Squaw Gulch likely will decrease the concentration of trace
metals (e.g., aluminum, manganese, nickel, and zinc) at SG -10.
5.2.4 Ground Water
5.2.4.1 Monitoring Program
Ground water conditions in Squaw Gulch are assessed by three monitor wells and one
shallow piezometer (Figure 2 -1). The monitor wells are designated SGMW -3A
(bedrock), SGMW -3B (alluvium/shallow bedrock), and SGMW -5 (bedrock). The
shallow piezometer is screened in the alluvium and is designated SG -04PZ. SGMW -3A
and SGMW -3B are co- located to allow assessment of vertical conditions of water level
and water quality in the Diatreme. SG -04PZ also is located within the Diatreme.
SGMW -5 is located in the adjacent granites.
Field parameters and water quality samples are collected quarterly at SGMW -3A,
SGMW -3B, SGMW -5, and SG -04PZ and analyzed for the parameters listed in Table 3 -2.
Pressure transducers have been installed in SGMW -3A, SGMW -3B, and SGMW -5 to
more frequently (2x- 4x/day) monitor the water level. The data are periodically
downloaded and compiled.
5.2.4.2 Data
The period of record and compiled field and water quality data (number of
measurements, less than detection events, maximum value, minimum value, average
value, standard deviation, and median value) for monitor wells SGMW -3A, SGMW -3B,
and SGMW -5 and piezometer SG -04PZ are provided in Tables 5 -5, 5 -6, 5 -7, and 5 -8,
respectively. Figure 5 -4 shows the hand level measurements and the pressure transducer
data for SGMW -3A, SGMW -3B, SGMW -5, and SG -04PZ. Time series plots of selected
parameters (pH, nitrate, and sulfate) are provided in Figure 5 -5. SGMW -3A and SGMW-
5 are dry and have no water quality data.
5.2.4.3 Discussion
Ground water levels in SGMW -3A (Diatreme) have shown dry conditions at or near the
bottom of the monitor well at approximately 146 feet bmp since installation in 1998.
Ground water levels in SGMW -5 (granite) have shown dry conditions (approximately
265 feet bmp) since installation in 2001. Water levels are shown in Figure 5 -4.
Ground water levels in SGMW -3B and SG -04PZ vary from 16.95 to 51.8 feet bmp and
3.4 to 7.8 feet bmp, respectively.
