During the initial construction of the SGVLF, the PSSA embankment will be constructed.
The embankment will provide containment for the PSSA and provide the road surface for
the realignment of a portion of SH 67.
The PSSA earthen embankment has the following dimensions:
• Average height of 215 feet
• 925 feet long
• Minimum crest width of 87 feet
• 2.5H:1V upstream slope
• 21-1:1V downstream slope
During construction of the PSSA embankment, a temporary tunnel will be placed over a
portion of SH 67 in Squaw Gulch to allow continued passage for vehicles traveling on
SH 67 between the Cities of Victor and Cripple Creek. A temporary construction road
will be built over the top of the tunnel. This traffic separation will ensure traffic on SH67
is uninterrupted while the embankment is being constructed. The earthen embankment
will be constructed using structural fill compacted to 95 percent of the standard Proctor
maximum dry density at or near the optimum moisture content. Once construction of the
embankment is complete, the highway will be constructed across the embankment,
meeting the standards of the CDOT.
As part of the SH 67 realignment, an existing historic crib wall will require removal. A
portion of the timbers from the crib wall removal will be maintained for use in
construction of a new retaining wall adjacent to the realigned SH 67, to allow for viewing
by the general public.
7.2.2.3 SGVLF Foundation
Preparation of the SGVLF foundation includes placing compacted structural fill during
site grading, and placing SLF. The site grading plan was developed to provide a stable
foundation while promoting internal drainage to the PSSA.
In general, areas of the SGVLF where the natural grade is in excess of 2.5H:1V will be
flattened to a 2.5H:1V by excavating or by compacting structural fill in controlled
horizontal lifts prior to SLF placement. There are some areas within the SGVLF
footprint that have been designed at a steeper slope, up to 1I-1:1V, due to site constraints.
Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Cresson Project Mine Life Extension 2
7 -9
