U <br />9.00 - INDUSTRY SUBBALLAST /BASE MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS <br />9.01 Subballast - This item shall consist of a foundation course for Union Pacific Railroad (UP) <br />ballast and shall be constructed in one or more courses in conformity with the typical sections shown <br />on plans. <br />9.02 Material Requirements - Materials shall be 100% crushed stone produced from oversized <br />quarried aggregate, sized by crushing and produced from a naturally occurring single source. <br />Aggregate retained on a No. 10 sieve shall consist of hard, durable particles or fragments of stone. <br />The Subballast material shall have: <br />a) No more than approximately 10% freeze -thaw loss when tested in accordance with ASTM C <br />88 -90, Standard Test Method for Soundness of Aggregate by Use of Sodium Sulfate (under 5 <br />cycles of freeze -thaw with sodium sulfate solution) <br />b) No more than 50% loss when tested in accordance with ASTM C 131 -89, Standard Test <br />Method for Resistance to Degradation of Small -Size Coarse Aggregate by Abrasion and <br />Impact in the Los Angeles Machine. <br />Industry's Contractor shall provide certification that the subballast/basc material meets UP's <br />Specifications. <br />9.03 Gradation - Subballast shall consist of gradations as set forth in UP Standard Drawing No. <br />0010. <br />9.04 Design Requirements - Subballast and its minimum depth is set forth in UP Standard Drawing <br />No. 0010. <br />43 <br />
