The sewage outfall is currently permitted to Pond 6. In
preparation for lining Pond 6, the pond will be drained by pumping into a tank. The sewage
effluent will be routed to the tank. The tank contents will then be pumped and hauled by a
licensed contractor for offsite disposal.
New Elk Mine submitted a Preliminary Effluent Limits (PEL) Application on
September 9, 2011 in anticipation of constructing a new sewage treatment package plant that
with discharge to the Middle Fork of the Purgatoire River. A site application will follow once
PEL's are established.
At the time of the site plan approval, an amendment to the permit will be submitted to
remove the discharge to Pond 6 and add the new domestic outfall. In the interim, reporting will
indicate no discharge to Pond 6.
SP:hlw
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at your earliest convenience.
cc: Kelly Morgan, CDPE Industrial Enforcement Division
Ron Thompson, New Elk Mine
Jim Stover, JE Stover and Associates
Sincerely,
Susan Patton.
