CO- 000906
2011Q3 Discharge Monitoring Reports
Enclosed are the discharge monitoring reports for the above referenced permit for the Third Quarter
2011.
No monitoring occurred from wells 050A, 050B, 050C and 050D. A monitoring plan for these wells was
submitted to CDPHE in 2009 with no approval received to-date. These wells have been installed and
monthly monitoring was initiated effective October 2011. (These wells have been monitored quarterly
since 1994 for the mine's DRMS mining permit. If requested, these results will be submitted to CDPHE).
The sewage treatment plant operated into September 2011. The treated water flows to a non - discharging
pond. The STP has been removed from service and the effluent transported to the City of Trinidad water
treatment plant for treatment. No effluent limitation had been imposed on the system until 2011. The
plant has proven to be non - compliant and has been removed from service. A larger plant is being
permitted with CDPHE and will be designed to meet PEL standards. It is expected to be in service by
mid -2012. Until then effluent will be treated by the City of Trinidad Plant Water that accumulated in the
receiving pond has also been transported to the Trinidad Plant for treatment.
No mine water or surface water discharges occurred during the third quarter 2011.
Regards,
on Thompson
Mine Manager
Attachment
Letter Agapito 8, Associates, October 27, 2011
NEW ELK COAL COMPANY LLC
122 WEST FIRST STREET
TRINIDAD, CO 81082
(719) 845 -0090
NEW ELK MINE
Ron Thompson
Mine Manager
