GOLD MINE
Houston, April 3, 1992 -- Battle Mountain Gold Company
(BMG) today announced that it has temporarily suspended
operation at its San Luis gold mane in Costilla county,
Colorado, while it makes modifications to the tailings
detoxification facility at the mill, which has not operated at
anticipated efficiency.
BMG Chairman Karl E. Elers said material with elevated
levels of cyanide is being contained as designed in the lined
and monitored tailings pond, which will protect against any
adverse environmental impact. He emphasized that the voluntary
suspension is being made in cooperation with the state of
Colorado as a precautionary measure, after sampling indicated
higher than anticipated levels of cyanide in the mine Is tailings
pond.
Measures are in place to keep wildlife from coming into
contact with the pond until normal levels are re-established.
Mr. Elers explained that the problem developed because
higher than anticipated copper content in the ore required
increased cyanide consumption, and an unusually 'cold winter
hindered the effective operation of the detoxification system.
The Company is working actively with the Mined Land
Reclamation Division of the State of Colorado to determine the
most appropriate short and long term modifications to its
detoxification system. BMG expects that it will be able to
obtain approval from the State of these modifications.
Mr. Elers noted that this appears to be a problem which can
be quickly resolved with available technology and without
significant cost or loss of production. The Company expects to
resume operations at the 70, 000 ounce per year facility within
a few days.
333 CLAY STREET 42ND FLOUR HOUSTON, TEKAS M)02-4103 (713)o 0-64W F (^13j 65U 3ti=o i
1711-1Fi tl i H LIII t C)l•.l 31 L I H13 l•li i i 1 [ : t i = {,-
