November 2011 Page 1 -9
NEW -3: A dip sample from the Apache Canyon shaft, used to assess the rate of flooding
and the quality of water in the New Elk Mine workings following sealing (see Table B -8).
NEW -4: This sample station, a well, located down dip a sufficient distance from the
portals to reach a known flooded portion of the New Elk Mine (near the conveyor belt), was
established to monitor the water levels and water quality. Data collected at this station (annual
minimum, maximum, mean) for 1995 through 2010 are presented in Table B -9.
1.2.6 Refuse Disposal Area Piezometers
TH -201: Station TH -201, a piezometer, installed on the lowest bench of the Refuse
Disposal Area fill (Bench 1) to determine the level of piezometric surface within the
embankment.
TH -202: Station TH -202, a piezometer, installed in the Refuse Disposal Area (Bench 2)
to determine the level of the piezometric surface within the embankment.
TH -203: Station TH -203, a piezometer, installed in the Refuse Disposal Area (Bench 3)
to determine the level of the piezometric surface within the embankment.
This information is to be used in analyses of embankment stability of the Refuse Disposal
Area landfill. Measurements (annual minimum, maximum, mean) for 1994 through 2010 are
presented in Table B -10.
1.2.7 UST Monitoring and Remediation Wells
As approved by CDPHE, the remediation system and monitoring wells were removed in
1999. The NPDES discharge permit for the system has also been terminated. For further
information please refer to prior annual hydrologic reports.
1.2.8 Inactive Stations
ACAW -1: A dip sample from an alluvial well located in the Apache Canyon alluvium at
the mouth of Apache Canyon. It was established to monitor potential effects of secondary or
retreat mining This station is currently inactive as per DRMS approval.
ACF -1: A grab sample from, and a measurement of, a stream flume located in Apache
Canyon approximately one -half mile from the confluence with the Purgatoire River. It was
established to assess potential effects of secondary or retreat mining on stream quality and flow.
This station is currently inactive as per DRMS approval.
WPD -1: A grab sample station of the West Portal Mine discharge pipe at the New Elk
Mine located in the inactive West Portal area. No data has been collected since 1989.
Thickener Pump: This site was established to monitor flows from the New Elk prep plant
thickener into the new Elk Mine workings (TR -34). This activity has not been initiated.
