Discharge from Sediment Ponds
The three sediment ponds at the Fruita Loadout Facility have been designed to retain water from
100 -year precipitation events from runoff within the facility, including the portion of railroad
spur inside the facility east of Reed Wash but not from the railroad spur west of Reed Wash.
There is no surface connectivity between the swales discussed above and the sediment ponds
because they are separated by Reed Wash. As noted in the BA, sediment would be removed
from all ponds when the ponds are 75 percent full of sediment.
Conservation Measure #4 states that water held in sediment ponds within the Loadout Facility
shall be pumped and removed to an approved disposal facility instead of discharged directly into
Reed Wash. It is reasonable to assume that water would be pumped and removed in the spring
with runoff from melting snow and again in the summer during the monsoon season. The ponds
would be lined so any water lost between discharges would be through evaporation.
Thank you and your staff for the coordinated effort.
