!~°`
• will leave the surface in a "rough" condition on the contour. The
resulting rough surface will help increase rainfall infiltration
needed to promote plant establishment and growth, to reduce runoff
potential and to minimize erosion while providing a topographic
configuration similar to the pre-mining condition. The final
surface as shown on the Existing and Final Contours and Sections
Map, (Map 12) will match the overall approximate pre-mining grade.
The anticipated final surface configuration of the surface
facilities area, in conjunction with the existing topography, are
shown on Map 12. The pre-mining topography is shown on the
Vegetation Map, (Map 3).
Temporary Sealing of Underground Openings
Any mine entry which is temporarily inactive, but has a future
useful life, will be protected by barricades or other covering
devices, fenced, and posted with signs to prevent access into the
entry and to identify the hazardous nature of the opening. These
devices will be periodically inspected and maintained in good
operating condition.
• Permanent Sealing of Underground Openings
When no longer needed for mining operations, all entries or other
openings to the surface from the underground mine will be sealed
and backfilled. Permanent closure measures will be constructed to
prevent access to the mine workings by people, livestock,
wildlife, and machinery.
Because of the geologic nature of the coal seams, the entries slope
toward the portal area. However, there has never been any gravity
discharge of water from the previous underground operations.
Furthermore, no acid-producing or toxic producing elements are
found in the coal seam. The Operator does not anticipate any
discharge from the permanently abandoned mine portals. The
analysis of overburden and interburden indicates an absence of any
acid or toxic forming material as described in Section 2.04.6.
• 2.05-28 Rev. 02-10-93
