microorganisms can be present. If left uncontrolled, these organisms can cause
problems in heat exchange equipment by depositing scale deposits that can reduce
the heat exchange efficiency of the system and also form corrosive products.
Various biocides are available for micobial control. Ozone and other oxidizers such
as chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and bromine may be used singly or in compatible
combinations. Bromine is preferred at alkaline pH. The tendency is to discourage
the use of chlorine because it can directly contribute to corrosion of some metal
surfaces.
D-5.3 NATURAL GAS
As previously indicated in Sections D-1.6 and D-4.2, natural gas will be provided from either
a Questar or Colorado Interstate Gas (CIG) pipeline. Gas will be provided via a 3 to 4 inch
underground pipeline. It is estimated that up to approximately 51 MMBTU/hour of gas will
be required for the 50,000 tpy pilot plant. Gas will not be stored on the plant site, but will be
used directly from the pipeline. The gas will be used in the steam boiler for process heating,
sodium bicarbonate product drying, space heating, heat tracing of wellfield surface piping
and steam cleaning. In addition, natural gas, air, nitrogen and/or CO2 will be used as the
gas pad during solution mining operations. As previously indicated, the pad will help keep
the solution mining liquid from migrating back up the outer part of the production well casing.
D-5.4 POWER
Electrical power will be provided to the project via a White River Electric Association 24 kV
powerline. It is estimated that approximately 12 MM kwh/year will be required to operate the
50,000 tpy pilot plant. Additional information on the source of power was provided in
Sections D-1.6 and D-4.2. The electricity will be used for operating processing facility lights,
pumps and other equipment.
D-5.5 COMMUNICATIONS
Communications (telephone and other service) will be provided from an existing line which
follows County Road 24. The communications cable will be located within the proposed
pilot plant access road or alternate natural gas pipeline right-of-way as discussed in
Sections D-1.6 and D-4.2.
\\SR B\VOL1\HOME\98106\LM1M78545.002\Reclamation\Reclamexh.DOC D-46
