4.0 Surface Monitoring
The purpose of the surface monitoring is to determine land surface movement as a
response to solution mining. The surface monitoring plan has been designed to ascertain
the shape and extent of surface subsidence should it occur above the well field. The
survey will include installation of three surface monuments inside the potential influence
of subsidence. Each production well and DSW -1 will also be used as a surface
monument. The surface monuments will be accurately surveyed with respect to a
permanent reference monument (e.g., section corner location) located outside the
influence of subsidence. Monuments will be surveyed annually, commencing prior to the
first production. Monitoring of surface monuments will continue for the duration of the
experimental project or be extended as part of an advanced mining project.
5.0 Reporting
A subsidence report will be submitted to the DMG, BLM, and EPA annually. The report
will contain data from surface- monument measurements and borehole geophysical data.
The annual subsidence report will include a map of surface - monument locations,
locations of wells where borehole geophysics were conducted, a list of monument and
well coordinates, survey data, and a summary of pertinent observations during the
reporting period.
6.0 Mitigation
No subsidence impact mitigation is currently planned. Based on studies conducted by
Agapito Associates, Inc., AmerAlia expects no surface subsidence and only minor pillar
and cavity roof activity. The overlying thickness of the strata between the uppermost
solution cavity roof and the Dissolution Surface is about 375 feet. This interval contains
massive halite improving fluid containment and providing daily assay indication of
unexpected subsidence prior to impacting overlying aquifers and oil shale. The 375 feet
thick interval will act as an excellent buffer and loading transfer mechanism to preclude
significant subsidence. The monitoring plan is designed for rapid detection of
unexpected subsidence and mitigation avoidance.
