• •
up and create a piston and bring out a section of water. You repeat until you've purged it out
and you don't have anything in the well long term. That, and the nitrogen lift pump are the
two techniques I like to use.
Paul von Guerard:
We probably don't want to spend a lot of time on this, but American Soda's using the
micropurge. These guys are using a different technique similar to what White River's doing.
Potentially, you could be getting very different results because of the way the samples are
taken. I don't know if you will, but there's potential that you might.
Paul von Guerard:
We discussed the micropurge process in our March meeting. Ned and I were talking about it
today before we came over and came up with a question in terms of knowing whether you're
getting formation water or the water from the bottom of the casing when you do a
micropurge. In any event, apart from that comment, if you're going to use different sampling
techniques you might potentially get different results.
Roger Day:
I would feel abused in a way. My job is to protect the aquifers. We've got things that we
have to do. Being consistent with the neighbor 4 miles over is not.. There may be slight
differences in the sampling techniques and the results. Theirs can be a credible system. We
can have a credible system. The type of shifts in the ions, that could happen by different
sampling techniques, won't really make that much difference in the overall.
Paul Osborne:
I was going to say that CA in Rio Blanco went to micropurge, too, and they did so because a)
they were getting better samples, and b) it was cheaper.
Roger Day:
Paul, does White River Nahcolite have a micropurge.
Paul Osborne:
No, I think it's the nitrogen lift.
Jerry Daub:
That micropurge, they're talking about a bladder pump, right?
Paul Osborne:
You could have. You put something down and basically withdraw it from the sample.
Roger Day:
That's what White River's doing. There's the pump down there with check balls in it. You
hook it up with a 2,000 -psi nitrogen bottle. You put the nitrogen down and the sample comes
up the opposite side. You take the pressure off, it refills and then you bring up the next one.
It's just different.
29
