9.a)Material balance calculations and down-hole remote sensing techniques will be used
to determine cavity size. AmerAlia will work closely with the DMG, and individual
cavities will be developed no larger than 125 feet in diameter during the initial mining
sequence without first conferring with the DMG. In Section D-3.5 it was stated that
"mining may be initiated over the entire open hole or be directed at specific intervals." It
is currently contemplated that mining will occur by undercutting in one of the three
experimental cavities, and that the other two cavities will be mined by spacing the
injection and recovery points a short distance apart, and over a longer distance apart.
Undercutting may not prove to be the most acceptable mining method.
9.b)AmerAlia will evaluate sophisticated remote sensing technologies, such as
tomography and the high resolution magnetotelluric system,to evaluate cavity shape and
dimensions and also to evaluate using material balance calculations to determine cavity
shape and dimensions. AmerAlia will also evaluate other technologies that may be
available to determine cavity shape and dimensions. AmerAlia will work closely with
the DMG in reviewing these cavity shape and dimension evaluations as mining
progresses.
9.c)A copy of the publication by Prats et al. (1977) is included with this Technical
Revision as Attachment 7.
9.d)AmerAlia feels that the remote monitoring technologies mentioned above will
adequately characterize cavity size and shape, and more importantly, pillar size and
shape.
10)An evaporation pond will no longer be used. The solids remaining from evaporating
water from waste streams will be sent to an approved landfill as they are generated. No
costs to dispose of these solids after plant shut-down are anticipated.
1 l.a)The plant site will be fenced to exclude cattle using a standard barbed wire fence
with cattle guards for road crossings. The evaporation and process ponds are no longer
part of the Project. The lined well field drainage pond, if constructed, will be fenced
following Colorado Department of Transportation(CDOT) specification for deer-proof
highway fencing. The CDOT fence corresponds to Standard M-607-1 "Deer Fence and
Gate." The deer-proof fencing will be placed on a uniform, constructed ground surface
avoiding gaps to assure exclusion of large animals.
1 Lb)Evaporation ponds are no longer part of the Project. A low water level of fresh
water likely will be maintained in the lined well field drainage pond(to protect and
anchor the liner), and this water will not be harmful to birds (or other wildlife). The liner
may alternatively be anchored by placing tires, sandbags, or other inert objects on the
liner.
1 l.c)For final reclamation,AmerAlia will plant shrub tublings or seed as appropriate to
achieve an adequate shrub component for wildlife value on approximately 20 percent of
6
DMG 11-23-99 Response AmeriAlia,Inc.
