Mr. Berhan Keffelew, DRMS
October 4, 2011
Page 2
The project will also include the installation of Bentomat ST which will serve as the sub -
grade for the LLDPE. The Bentomat ST will be installed per specifications as outlined in
attachment entitled "Section 02776.2 Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) ".
The geosynthetic components will overlay a one (1) foot layer of bedding fill, and be
overlain by a two (2) foot layer of bedding fill. As outlined in attached AMEC drawing No.
A110, the bedding fill shall consist of material meeting the requirements of low volume
solution collection fill in accordance with attached specification "Section 2200.0
Earthworks ".
Please also refer to the following attached AMEC drawings for additional detail: Dwg No.
A100 - "LOB Liner Extension Existing Conditions and Proposed Grading ", Dwg No. A105 -
"LOB Liner Extension Proposed Excavation Plan, Isopach and Control Points ", and Dwg
No. A110 - "LOB Liner Extension Sections and Details ", all dated September 20, 2011.
Construction quality assurance will be provided by AMEC. An as -built report will be
submitted to DRMS in a timely manner upon completion of the project.
VLF Phase IV Perimeter Berm Raise (or previously named "Liner Extension ")
This project includes the construction of an enhanced containment berm along the Phase IV
liner perimeter in order to increase the capacity of the area to withstand upset process
solution conditions. This is an extension toward the west of a previously completed project
referenced in Technical Revision No. 52 dated October 30, 2008.
Initially, the existing liner will be exposed by the removal of the existing Drain Cover Fill
(DCF) in the area. A new containment berm approximately 345' in length and a minimum of
2' in height with a 2' flat top will be constructed directly over the existing anchor trench.
Select structural fill will be utilized for the berm material and it will be placed at angle -of-
repose slope.
The berm will be overlain with single -sided textured 60 or 80 mil Linear Low Density
Polyethylene ( "LLDPE "), installed by a qualified liner contractor under the same
specifications used on the VLF. Incidentally, the textured LLDPE will be installed with the
textured side down.
The liner will be extrusion welded to the existing exposed liner approximately 2' from the
toe of the newly constructed berm. The liner will also be anchored along the perimeter road
berm without impacting the existing key trench.
Please also refer to the following attached AMEC drawing No. 1 - "Berm Raise Alignment
and Profile" dated May 6, 2011 for additional detail. Construction quality assurance will be
provided by AMEC. An as -built and certification report will be submitted to DRMS in a
timely manner upon completion of the project.
