September 26, 2011 C- 1984 - 065 /Coal Ridge No. 1 Mine JRS
RECLAMATION SUCCESS - Rule 4.15, Rule 3:
- The entire site was well vegetated at the time of the inspection. There are areas on the site, between the
reclaimed benches, that were not disturbed and are covered with shrubs. There are also scattered shrubs visible
around the site.
- In the past inspection reports the Division has noted a knapweed infestation on the site. Large patches of both
Russian and Diffuse knapweed are present on the site. The operator has sprayed the site for weeds over the past
year and has knocked back the knapweed. From the aerial photographs, there were no large, green patches of
Russian knapweed noted among the grasses. The operator will need to remain vigilant to control the knapweed
infestation on the site.
- There appeared to be approximately 25 head of cattle grazing on the reclaimed Coal Ridge Mine at the time of
the inspection. There were also several head of cattle grazing outside the fence around the site. It was noted in the
July 2011 inspection report that a lone, rogue cow was grazing the site (and a larger herd was grazing on the
adjacent property). It is not clear whether this grazing was planned by the landowner or whether the cattle entered
the site through a hole in the perimeter fence. If the landowner wants to use the site for grazing, a plan must be
submitted to the Division for approval prior to the grazing. If the cattle entered the site through a hole in the
perimeter fence, it should be fixed.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED: None
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 2
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 1
Page 3 of 5
