September 23, 2011 C- 1981 - 014 /Southfield Mine JHB
dominated by blue grama grass. This site was very dry at the time of the inspection but vegetation species
appeared healthy. No weeds were observed in the grassland reference area, and the few forbs noted, Spotted
gayfeather, was extremely stunted in height.
REVEGETATION — Rule 4.15 Vegetative Cover; Timing:
Vegetation throughout the mine site remains in good condition. Shrubs are showing signs of drought
stress with browning tops and some mortality. Many of the four -wing Saltbrush and juniper individual plants
appear to be thriving. The RDA contains a good diversity of shrubs: predominately four -wing Saltbrush on the
south and west sides of the pile, Junipers, Pinyon, and several Ponderosa pine on the north side, and Yucca on the
east side.
Shrubs in the reclaimed pond 3 area were robust in size, standing 3 -4 feet in height. Numerous Four -wing
Saltbrush were well established, thriving and establishing new seedlings. Four -wing was predominant on the north
and east side of this reclaimed area. Rabbitbrush in this area was showing sign of decadence and die off. No
young Rabbitbrush seedlings were observed. Most of the rabbitbrush plants appeared to be of similar age,
indicating that this species established early after initial reclamation, but as the seeded grass and shrub species
become established, the rabbitbrush is not thriving. Many of the transplanted juniper and ponderosa seedlings were
surviving.
OFFSITE SUPPORT FACILIITES - Rule 4.04,4.28:
The load out is located to the east of Florence. The site was dry, both ponds were dry. Both gates to the
site remain closed. There does not appear to be continual trespass across this site and there was no evidence of
recent 4- wheeler activity across the site. No problems were identified with the Load -out site.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED: NA
OTHER (SPECIFY)
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 2
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 1
Page 4 of 10
