May Day /Idaho Mine — Geotechnical Stability Exhibit Comments to August 2011 Submittal
Page 3
August 19, 2011
velocity. DRMS cannot verify channel design based on information in Table U -11, or
from pages immediately preceding or following Table U -11.
12. Page 8, Augmentation Pond, second to last paragraph. The first line states "Embankment
slopes will not be steeper than 1 (H) to 1 (V) without DRMS approval... ". This is
incorrect. DRMS will require slope stability analyses addressing a) empty /dry
conditions, b) full capacity conditions, and c) rapid draw down conditions for any
embankment design to impound water with slopes greater than 3H:1 V.
13. Page 9, fourth paragraph. The applicant indicates that because the embankment height is
less than 10 feet "the concern for dam failure through an engineered constructed berm is
not probable. DRMS is concerned with a berm failure in this instance with respect to
impacts to the hydrologic balance, pursuant to Rule 3.1.6.
If either you or the applicants have any questions regarding the comments above, please call me
at (303) 866 -3567, extension 8169.
c: \documents and settings \sss \local settings \temporary internet files \content.outlook \a5ghsruj \exh6
5geotechstabcomments_mem 19augl 1.docx
