Memo to Wally Erickson 3
Wildcat CN -01 Access Road Geotechnical Adequacy Review
August 22, 2011
File No. M- 1981 -185
No Access Road plan or construction may be implemented without Division review and
approval. The Applicant must commit to submitting the new geotechnical investigation
information, with the revised road design if required, for Division review and approval
through either the Technical Revision or Amendment process prior to commencing access
road reconstruction activities.
7. In the Pre - Construction Activities section of the Work Plan the Applicant proposes to drill 6
test boring and excavate 4 test pits at the approximate location shown in Attachment 6.5 -3
Figure 5. Figure 5 in Attachment 6.5.3 — Geotechnical Reconnaissance Mine Access Road is a
photograph of the lower portion of the retaining wall and does not indicate the locations of
the proposed test boring and pits. Please explain this discrepancy and provide a location map
for the proposed borings and pits.
8. In the Pre - Construction Activities section of the Work Plan the Applicant states they will
perform an engineering and geologic evaluation for the stability of cut slopes in rock and
colluviums areas. The Applicant has not proposed test boring in these areas. Please explain
how the engineering and geologic evaluation will be completed without additional
information.
9. Please provide the proposed carrying load for the reconstructed access road and provide
justification in accordance with La Plata County requirements.
10. In the Construction Summary and Scheduling section of the Work Plan the Applicant states
material from the inside road cuts will be removed using a dozer. Will blasting be required to
remove the bedrock in the inside cut sections of the road? If so, please provide a blasting plan
for Division review.
11. In the Construction Summary and Scheduling section of the Work Plan the Applicant states to
stabilize the previously constructed out slope, material from the top of the fill to an area
approximately 20 feet (Attachment A — Sheet C3.10) from the base of the fill will be
sequentially removed in 10 foot or less benches to form the final slope grade. Please clarify
the following items pertaining to this statement:
a. Attachment A — Sheet 3.10 does not illustrate the out slope fill material removal
method. Please provide cross - sections and conceptual drawings to depict the
proposed fill material removal process and retaining structure construction.
b. Please confirm all previously placed fill material will be removed and the excavation
will continue until bedrock is exposed to provide a subgrade for fill placement, as
indicated in the Retaining Structures section of the Work Plan.
