SAM .LL MAMMAL STUDIES
Small rrsmal species composition, abundance, and habitat association were
determined by live trap censusing conducted during Octobpr, 1979.(see
Results, page 27). Three loom transects were placed in representative areas
of each of the following vegetation types on the study area,
1. Upland sagebrush
2. Grassland pasture
An additional transect was established in a small riparian area on the north-
east edge of the study area (Map 11 -1, Appendix A). Two Sherman live traps
were placed at each 10m interval along each transect. Traps were baited with
a peanut butter, cracked corm, rolled oats,' bacon fat mixture and checked
for four consecutive nights. All traps were provided with dacron- -fiber
batting to avoid animal loss due to hypothermia. All individuals captured
were toe - clipped and recorded according to species, sex, age (juvenile or
adult), reproductive status (active or inactive), and location and then
released.
AVIFAUNA STUDIES
cur different components of the avifauna were studied:
1. Passerine birds
2. Raptorial birds
3. Upland game birds
4. Waterfowl
Four different surveys were undertaken to determine the presence, abundance
and production of avifauna on the study area:
JUN 1 1 5994,
