The wide range in annual temperatures is due to the high degree of variation in the kinds of weather
systems that influence the interior of continents. In winter temperature is largely controlled by the influx of
more polar air. In summer the combination of a southerly air flow and the lack of attenuating water bodies
results in high temperatures.
The wide range in daily temperatures (about 30 degrees F) is due to a low humidity. With increasing
humidity the temperature range tends to be reduced due to the ability of water vapor to hold heat gathered
during the day followed by a slow release of heat at night.
2
