of the larger particles removed) of the soils from the Deepe Farm Pit that 70 percent
of the sample was larger than the No. 4 sieve.
LEVEE CONDITIONS
The levee is a compacted earth structure. Surveys of the levee indicate the
steepest slopes are approximately :1 hori ontel:vertieal), the crest width is
approximately 1 feet, and the maximum levee section is approximately -feet tell.
Based on levee height and slope steepness the critical cross section of the levee
is located at Station 124+00. This section is shown in Fig. 7 and was the focus of
ge teehni al evaluation. Seepage, slope stability, and consolidation analyses of
the levee are presented below.
The maintenance work done during reclamation of the gravel pit was recently
completed. This maintenance was done after the geotechnioal exploration. The
levee slopes are free of trees and brush (see Appendix 13).
Part of the maintenance during the reclamation of the Deepe Farm Pit
included minor grading to finally shape the levee crest and slopes to the desired
configuration. CTUThompson, Inc. observed and tested the embankment fill placed
during the maintenance work (see Appendix .
At locations just beyond the land side tee of the levee water was seeping
from the ground but was not affecting the structural integrity of the levee. There
was no evidence of piping (movement of fines from the ground under the levee
through the seeps). The locations of seeps apparent in arid - urnmer of 1 were
surveyed by Scott, Cox and Associates. The results of that surveying are in
Appendix C. The seeps that were apparent in the fall at approximately stations 112
+ 00, 124 + 00 and 126 + 00 just beyond the land side toe of the levee were covered
with a geofabric and covered with sand and gravel.
FLATIRON COMPANIES
LEVEE AT DEEPE FARM PIS'
CTUT 25t3B5
