4. Judging from observations of test pits excavated into older levels of
the levee and results of compaction tests of compacted fill placed
during maintenance work on the levee during reclamation of the
gravel pit showed the levee to be densely compacted. The
consolidation of the older levels of the levee has occurred.
Maintenance of the crest of the levee recently required it be raised
through several short reaches up to 2.4 feet. This fill adds little
additional Weight to the existing levee. Given the compactness of the
levee and the dense soils there should be no noticeable change in
freeboard.
5. Inspection of the levee and the results of this study shows the levee
meets the geotechnioally related FEMA criteria.
INVESTIGATION F LEVEE
The subsurface profile at the levee was investigated by drilling 9 test holes
and drillinglex acv ting 9 test pits during the planning for the maintenance wort for
the gravel pit reclamation. The test holes and three of the test pits were drilled from
the crest of the levee and the other six test pits were a t the toes of the levee on
either side. An additional 3 holes Were drilled for Packer permeability tests and
for Failing Head permeability tests. Locations of test holes and test pits used to
investigate the levee and its permeability are shown in Fig. 1.
The test holes and the holes for permeability testing were advanced using
4-inch diameter, continuous flight auger. The 3 test pits in the levee crest were
drilled using a 42 -inch diameter auger and ar large caisson drill rig. The 6 test pits
at the toes of the levee were excavated usirig a small backhoe. TL /Thompson
directed the drilling and excavation of test holes and test pits, logged the
subsurface profile, obtained samples, and supervised the field permeability tests.
Summary logs of test holes, test pits and the results of field permeability tests are
shorn in Figs. 2 through 6. The results of the compaction testing done in the large
diameter holes drilled in the levee are summarized in Table 11.
Samples obtained from test holes and test pits were visually classified and
select samples were subjected to laboratory testing. This testing included
gradation analysis, Atterberg Limits, , natural moisture and density, compaction,
FLATIRON COMPANIES
LEVEE AT DE PE FARM PIS`
CTUT 25,385
