August 4, 2011 C-1981-037/GEC Strip Mine JHB
Further to the south along the access road is a large gully that originates between the East Pit and West Pit. This
gully has been in place for some time based upon the size of the vegetation growing in the bottom of the gully.
Active back cutting was apparent on the west side of this gully. Rock had been placed on the north side of the
access road where runoff from this feature crosses the roadway. The repaired rip rapped portion of this gully
appears to be holding up and not down cutting further.
The broken concrete check dams in the drainage north of the access road remain in place. The gully in the
drainage is down-cut 10 to 15 deep in places. Drainage from this location reports to the Magpie Creek reroute
drainage.
ROADS—Rule 4.03Drainage 4.03.1(4)/4.03.2(4)
Surfacing and Maintenance4.03.1(5)and(6)/4.03.2(5)and(6)Reclamation 4.03.1(7)/4.03.2(7):
Side cutting of the access road by runoff into the collection ditch was a concern noted by the landowner. Down-
cutting of the ditch encroaches upon the road width. There were specifically two locations on the northwest curve
of Chen's hill where down-cutting along the roadway was cutting into the road width, and reducing the width of
vehicles that could traverse the road. The rest of the road continued to be functional with no additional rilling of
the roadway.
RECLAMATION SUCCESS -Rule 4.15, Rule 3:
Erosional features(gullies)on portions of the slopes are still evident. The collection ditches in the reclaimed mine
site have down cut significantly in areas. The landowner,Dr. Corley expressed his frustration with the condition
of the site and his concern that the problems will continue to exacerbate.
The Orphan pit was not inspected during this inspection.
REVEGETATION—Rule 4.15 Vegetative Cover;
Vegetation has been established on the reclaimed areas since the initial seeding in 1994.
Vegetation shows varying diversity, and varying ages of the reclamation could be recognized by variances in
vegetation composition. Wildlife usage of the area was evident from mule deer scat throughout the reclaimed
areas. Shrubs,rabbitbrush and sagebrush,have been established throughout the site. Occasional Juniper trees were
observed in the reclaimed areas. Grass cover was fair in spite of the droughty conditions over the past few years.
SLIDES and DAMAGE -Rule 4.12:
There were no landslides or slump scarps were visible on the regraded slopes.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED None
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 0
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 2
Page 4 of 7
