July 25, 2011
C -1980- 001 /Edna Strip Mine JHB
through the drainage. Several small patches of Whitetop near this drainage were browning up. It was
indeterminate if this was the effect of weed control or warmer, dryer temperatures.
ROADS — Rule 4.03 ❑ ❑ Construction 4.03.1(3)/4.03.2(3)011 Drainage 4.03.1(4)/4.03.2(4) ❑ ❑ Surfacing and
Maintenance4.03.1(5) and (6)/4.03.2(5) and (6)0 ❑Reclamation 4.03.1(7)/4.03.2(7):
The approved permanent roads throughout the permit area remain in good to fair condition. The portion of the
North Haul road previously identified as needing to be graded has not yet been repaired Rilling occurred in a
100+ yard portion of the North Haul road immediately South of the intersection with the Moffat Pond access road.
Additional rilling has occurred at the east end of the Moffat Pond access road from recent storms. Grading of
these permanent roads is necessary. The South access road to RCR 27 south of the permit area boundary has been
graded.
RECLAMATION SUCCESS - Rule 4.15, Rule 3:
Chevron Mining has sent an e -mail to the Division noting that weed control spraying had been conducted on the
Edna mine site since the June 21, 2011, follow up bond release inspection. This partial inspection took particular
note of the effectiveness of the 2011 weed control measures.
Previously identified weed patches throughout the mine site show signs of stress: yellowing or browning. Canada
thistle plants to the south of the Moffat pond were not exhibiting curling or yellowing. Previous treatments of
Canada thistle using Milestone (c) showed no immediate sign of chemical uptake until the plants just turned
brown, so an immediate curling effect would not be anticipated if Milestone was the herbicide used. Chevron has
not provided the Division a report detailing the 2011 weed control measures at the time of this inspection.
No new patches or previously unidentified Noxious weed species were encountered during this inspection. The
large patch of Whitetop, Canada thistle and houndstongue identified on Terrace T8 in the West pit reclamation
during the June inspection shows a considerable amount of die -off, and most of the noxious species in this area
have turned yellow.
REVEGETATION — Rule 4.15 ❑ ❑ Vegetative Cover; Timing:
Grasses throughout the mine site are growing well. Noxious weeds remain minimal though occasional patches are
present. Most of the Whitetop patches have yellowed, and a few Canada thistle diffuse patches were still green.
4 horses were observed grazing in the West pit area. The Division is not aware of a current gazing plan. Alfalfa,
Yellow sweetclover, and Cicer milkvetch were all in full bloom.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED: None
OTHER (SPECIFY)
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 1
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 0
Page 3 of 6
