Water Quality Monitoring Plan Climax Molybdenum Company
Version: R1 Permit No. M -1977 -493
411 Where t is the Student t distribution, n is the number of samples, s is the standard deviation for
the sample population, and a is 0.05.
•
If the data are not normally distributed, Climax will use Land's Method (Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA), 2006, p. 57 -58) or other applicable method to calculate the evaluation
criterion (Appendix D). This method involves calculating the standard deviation of log -
transformed data values, and calculating the criterion based on values provided in a look -up
table. The log of the NPL will be used in place of the mean of the log- transformed data in the
equation provided in Appendix D.
If a sample result is determined to be a statistically significant exceedance of an NPL using the
applicable method, the first response will be to resample the well, within 30 days of the receipt
of the analytical results. If both of the new analytical results do not exceed this statistical
criterion, sampling will continue at the normally scheduled frequency. If both exceed the
criterion for that parameter, it is assumed that the criterion has been exceeded.
The following steps outline the procedure that will be taken if a result is confirmed to have
exceeded an NPL and Climax's data trend analysis does not find the result to be anomalous, or
an obvious outlier:
1. Climax will verbally notify DRMS that an exceedance has occurred within 10 days of
receiving the analytical results for the second sample and in writing within 30 days.
Notification will include, at a minimum, the following information:
2. The increased - monitoring proposal will address a modified sampling frequency for
the POC well and may include sampling of the receiving surface water in the vicinity
of the POC well (the Arkansas River, the East Fork of the Eagle River, or Tenmile
Creek) for DRMS review and approval. The proposal will include a schedule for
reporting and follow up discussions with DRMS.
3. If the results of the additional monitoring data indicate that quality of the receiving
water may be affected, Climax will notify DRMS and initiate timely discussions with
DRMS on the appropriate actions to be implemented.
5.2 Internal Monitoring Sites
110 5.2.1 Monitoring Locations
EPP — Appendix C
a. The constituent identified to be in excess of established action level or standard;
b. The location at which the exceedance was identified;
c. Analytical data, including the date the samples were collected and the
concentrations at which the constituent was measured; and
d. Increased monitoring measures being undertaken.
Notifications will be submitted to the following location:
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
August, 2011 18
