DIVISION OF RECLAMATION, MINING AND SAFETY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: (303) 866 -3567
FAX: (303) 832 - 8106
15 July 2011
Office of
Mined Land Reclamation
Jim Stover, PE
Minrec, Inc.
2352 N 7th St, Ste B
Grand Junction, CO 81501
RE: North Thompson Creek Mines (C- 1981 -025)
2010 Annual Hydrology Report (AHR)
Dear Mr. Stover:
STATE OF COLORADO
The Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (Division) has received a
copy of the 2010 Annual Hydrology Report (AHR) for Minrec, Inc's North Thompson
Creek Mines. The AHR was dated 2 February 2011 and received by the Division on 4
February 2011. Thank you for your timely submittal of this report.
On 20 April 2006 Minrec was notified by the Colorado Department of Health, Water
Quality Control Division (WQCD) that the NPDES permit for the North Thompson
Creek Mines was given an inactive status as of 14 March 2005. At that point Minrec
discontinued all water monitoring at the site. On 9 April 2008 WQCD notified Minrec
that it would need to reapply for an NPDES permit for the North Thompson Creek Mines.
On 22 December 2009 the WQCD issued discharge permit CO- 048233, effective 1
February 2010.
Minrec reinitiated water sampling at the North Thompson Creek Mines on 12 February
2010, as required. Water was discharged from outfall 001A (the outfall from Treatment
Pond T -2) to the North Thompson Creek. Discharges were monitored on 2 February
2010, 21 February 2010, 12 March 2010, 23 March 2010, 7 April 2010 and 14 April
2010. In May 2010 the discharge from Treatment Pond T -2 was rerouted to sediment
pond P -9 and the refuse pile pond. No water was discharged into the North Thompson
Creek from May 2010 through December 2010 (although Minrec did collect and analyze
samples from the T -2 discharge into the sediment ponds).
The following chart shows the average values for flow, pH, specific conductivity, total
dissolved solids (TDS) and iron for the 2010 samples and the averages for the sampling
years 2000 -2005, which were the last six years the discharge was sampled. The data
shows that the water quality for the 2010 samples is basically the same as the water
quality for the 2000 -2005 averages.
COLORADO
D I V I S I O N O F
RECLAMATION
MINING
— &—
SAFETY
John W.
