(Colowyo); Spill No. 2011 -0461
Dear Mr. Peterson,
This letter is a follow up on a phone conversation reporting a spill to the Colorado
Department of Public Health and Environment on July 12, 2011, at approximately 13:27
P.M., by Mr. Tony Tennyson for the initial reporting of a spill that occurred on July 12,
2011, at approximately 11:00 P.M.
Colowyo Coal Company experienced a spill of approximately 50 gallons of transmission
oil in the 133 overburden seam in the South Taylor Pit. This spill occurred as 265 water
trucks was loading water to an overburden drill, a pump failed, and material was
discharged onto the ground. The machine stopped where it was working and the area
was immediately bermed off. Colowyo maintenance department repaired the hydraulic
pump where the machine broke down, and after repair to the 265 water truck, it was
removed from the spill location. Subsequent to the loader removal two scarper loads of
dirt were removed from the area and hauled it to our in -pit treatment location. The spill
was completely isolated due to the isolated location in the South Taylor Pit; nonetheless
the spill did . not enter any state waterways.
If you should have any additional questions please feel free to contact me at your
convenience at (970) 824 -1532.
Sincerely,
Tony Ten(iys n
Environmental Engineer
Cc: C.I. 19.3
S IA) k L
FN
RECEIVED
JUL 1 4 LU11
Colo.
