June 21, 2011 C -1980- 001 /Edna Strip Mine JHB
yet sprayed in the West Ridge area at the time of the inspection. He had concentrated on White top, and was
scheduled to spray for Houndstongue, Canada thistle, and Perennial pepperweed later in the month. Habitat
management is using the herbicide Escort for White top, 2,4 -D, and Milestone, for Canada thistle and
Houndstongue.
There are still sporadic patches of White top visible in the reclaimed Moffat pit area, and several limited areas of
Canada thistle and Houndstongue in the Moffat area. Areas immediately around the Moffat pond exhibited a
concentration of Canada thistle, Houndstongue, and Perennial pepperweed. Ms. Jazwick noted concerns in this
area near the Moffat pond. We discussed this area with Chris Keogh and he noted this area for additional weed
control.
Areas previously treated for Canada thistle and Houndstongue to the east of the Moffat pond showed excellent
signs of wced control, with only a few individual plants remaining. Milestone was used in this area in 2009 and
2010.
John and Terri Redd expressed concern about weeds to the south of the Moffat pond. A walk through this area
found some patches of Canada thistle and some small patches of Houndstongue. This location was noted by the
operator and weed control contractor as needing additional treatment.
The inspection progressed to the West Ridge area. The West Ridge mining area was disturbed prior to the
permanent program, and as such limited topsoil was available for replacement. Although much of the West Ridge
vegetation shows few weeds, there were some patches of White top and Houndstongue present. One patch
previously identified and treated between terraceT8 and T9, still exhibited an infestation but the size of this patch
was greatly reduced over previous years. The operator and weed contractor stated that they would treat this area
again. Other patches of white top, houndstongue, Canada thistle or other noxious species encountered or observed
will be sprayed this month as well.
The species considered for control are those on the State Noxious Weed list, or listed by Routt County Weed
Department.
West Ridge Pond had no visible weeds in its vicinity. The Center Ridge Pond had a couple small patches of White
top that needed to be treated.
At the close of the inspection, the inspector asked if participant had any remaining concerns. Mr Hayden
continued to have concern regarding weeds, and also voiced concern over weed on lands that had previously been
phase III bond released. He also noted his concern with the road damage south of the "y" intersection of the North
Road and the Lower Moffat Road.
Lori Jaswick and Lou Dequene left before the end of the inspection, but Lori had noted her concern regarding
weeds near the Moffat pond. John and Terri Redd and noted their concern regarding weeds on their property and
weeds on property adjacent to theirs, both within the permit area and outside of the permit area. Mr. Doolan had
left prior to the end of the inspection as well. There was concern expressed regarding a slump on the southern
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 9
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 4
Page 4 of 8
