The permit contains a series of four bin -wall ponds for sediment control. Ponds One and Three were dry.
Pond Two was retaining water, but not discharging. There is a tree stump stuck in the top of the inlet
side of the discharge pipe. The operator's representative stated that the tree stump would be removed
promptly. Pond 4 was muddy, but had no standing water. The sheeting for the bin walls of Pond 4 had
been grouted to repair a few leaks that had formed; the grout was still functioning properly since there
was no sign of leaking. [MAINTENANCE: Tree stump from pipe needs to be removed.]
The West Mine area was developed after a thermal event occurred in the underground mine works. This
thermal event made underground access to the East Mine facilities difficult. The West Mine facilities
were permitted and reclaimed under the permanent program. The vegetation on the West Mine
reclamation is stable and diverse. There are patches of thistle that need to be eliminated so that the
weeds don't spread to the rest of the reclamation. The operator's representative was notified that weed
control measures were necessary.
Steven's Gulf Road was mined under, but without pillar extraction. There is still a possibility of
subsidence, so subsidence warning signs were placed along the 0.4 mile section of road that was mined
under. No evidence of subsidence has ever been documented.
Action Items
DRMS will follow up with the operator's representative to verify that the noted maintenance items have
been performed.
