June 8,2011 C-1984-065/Coal Ridge No. 1 Mine JRS G:;E?
ROADS—Rule 4.03 Construction 4.03.1(3)/4.03.2(3)Drainage 4.03.1(4)/4.03.2(4) Surfacing and
Maintenance4.03.1(5) and(6)/4.03.2(5)and(6)Reclamation 4.03.1(7)/4.03.2(7):
-The remaining roads were all well maintained and stable at the time of the inspection. The roads are used to
access the site and they are used for an outfitter to access the lands to the south of the mine. The upper roads
(mainly on the reclaimed benches)are beginning to fill in with vegetation due to lack of use.
RECLAMATION SUCCESS -Rule 4.15,Rule 3:
-The mine site, overall, is very well vegetated. The Division has noted a large infestation of Russian Knapweed
and Diffuse Knapweed in past inspection reports. The Division walked the entire site during the inspection and
did not see any knapweed yet. The Division did not see any florets of the diffuse knapweed along the haul road,
where it was most prevalent. The knapweed will probably emerge later this spring and the operator should
keep a close eye on the site and spray the knapweeds before they have a chance to go to seed this fall. The
operator may also need to do a fall spraying to help control the Russian Knapweed before it goes dormant.
-The Division did note some thistle plants starting to grow around the site. The operator will need to spray for
the thistle as well as the knapweeds when they do their weed spraying this summer. Thistle that has been
seen on the site include bull thistle,Canadian thistle and scotch thistle.
-The lower portion of the reclaimed area,by the sediment pond, was determined to be a AVF during the initial
permitting for the site. The post-mining land-use for this area is irrigated pasture. Although pasture grasses were
planted and noted during the Phase II Bond Release, there has been no irrigation as of late. The Division noted
smooth brome, crested wheatgrass and alfalfa as the dominant species in the area of the AVF and irrigated pasture
area. There was also a fair amount of bulbous bluegrass, which is considered a weed,
-The upper reclaimed bench was also well vegetated. Dominant species included crested wheatgrass, smooth
brome and alfalfa. There was also bulbous bluegrass present but it was not as common as in the AVF area.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED:None
This completes the Division's 8 June 2011 inspection report for the Coal Ridge Mine
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 0
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 4
Page 3 of 5
