No representative from Minrec, Inc. accompanied me on
the inspection. The bond has been released for all but 4.1 acres of the site, which represents a mine discharge and
a series of treatment ponds in a developed water resource. The weather was warm and sunny and the ground was
dry at the time of the inspection.
AVAILABILITY OF RECORDS—Rule 5.02.4(1):
-All of the necessary records were in the records room at the Garfield County Court House in Glenwood Springs.
See the Availability of Records form at the end of this inspection for more detailed information.
HYDROLOGIC BALANCE-Rule 4.05 Drainage Control 4.05.1,4.05.2,4.05.3; Siltation Structures 4.05.5,
4.05.6; Discharge Structures 4.05.7,4.05.10; Diversions 4.05.4; Effluent Limits 4.05.2; Ground Water Monitoring
4.05.13; Surface Water Monitoring 4.05.13; Drainage—Acid and Toxic Materials 4.05.8; Impoundments 4.05.6,
4.05.9; Stream Buffer Zones 4.05.18:
-The water discharging from the#3 mine was discharging very high in iron, as evidenced by the orange color of
the discharge. This is normal for the spring runoff time for the#3 mine. The discharge from the#1 mine was
clear at the time of the inspection. These discharges combine and flow through the Long Pond, where most of the
iron is removed.
-The Long Pond was stable and well vegetated at the time of the inspection. There was a good stand of cat tails in
the pond, which helps to remove the iron from the mine discharge. There is a good deal of iron(orange) staining
at the inlet of the long pond from the iron in the#3 mine discharge. As the water flows through the pond the
staining goes away, as the iron is removed. The Long Pond discharges into treatment ponds T-1 and T-2.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 0
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 4
Page 2 of 7
