May Day Idaho Mine Complex 112 (d) Permit Application
Designated chemicals will be consumed during the milling process and will be contained
in the tails disposed of in underground workings.
Tailings will be stored in the underground workings following additional testing (Section
6.4.20(19)).
(c) Alterations to Naturally Occurring Geological and Geochemical Conditions
The site is located at the southwest region of the La Plata Mountains, a laccolithic type
mountain group produced by the domal uplift of sedimentary rocks intruded by igneous
stocks, dikes and sills (Eckel, 1949). The permit area is predominately sedimentary rocks
with mineralized zones in the form of limestone replacement or porphyry veins and
dykes. The existing conditions reflect historical mining activities occurring for over 100
years and alterations to the naturally occurring geological and geochemical conditions are
not anticipated.
(d) Monitoring Systems
Tailings will be monitored during the mill optimization phase An operational
sampling program will be developed and submitted to Division prior to full mine
production.
A sump will be installed adiacent to the dry tailings' disposal location to collect and
evaluate leachate generation.. If leachate is generated, a sample will be analyzed to
determine if the leachate is toxic or hazardous. The leachate if it is generated will be
or recycled through the mill.
Surface water will be sampled on a quarterly basis as per Section 6.4.20(12) from the
following locations:
• Upper Little Deadwood Gulch (DW-1);
• Lower Little Deadwood Gulch(DW-2);
• Upper La Plata River (SW-1);
• Lower La Plata river (SW-2);
• Idaho Spring (IS-1);
• Wetlands (WL-1) and
• Augmentation Pond Water (if the pond is constructed)
Groundwater will be monitored from the discharge at the Idaho No. 1 adit as per Sections
6.4.20(12) and 6.4.20(19) and other well locations approved by the DRMS\.
(e) Release Response Procedures
The following release response procedures will be followed:
• Spilled areas will be contained with socks;
REVISED June S, 2011
May Day Idaho Mine Complex 112(d) Permit Application
September 21, 2010
i
