May Day Idaho Mine Complex 112 (d) Permit Application
There is little published information regarding groundwater conditions in the vicinity of
the mine site. A groundwater well search was undertaken within the project area
(CDWR, 2010). A review of well permits indicates that most wells are located within:
• Alluvial material of the La Plata River;
• Sandstone (undefined, presumed Morrison Formation) north of the fault system;
or
• Mancos Shale south of the Fault System.
Groundwater uses include:
• Domestic;
• Household; and
• Commercial.
The location of groundwater wells and a summary of the well permit data are presented
in Attachment T-2.
Based on the structural interpretation and fracture analysis interpretation-(Section
6.4.20(8)), there is no pathway from groundwater beneath the permit area or the
proposed tailings disposal area to groundwater receptors. (Rule 6.5.21(14).
(b) Groundwater Quality Data
No groundwater wells are located within the permit area. As such, no groundwater
quality data has been collected to date. A groundwater quality monitoring plan is
presented in Section 6.4.20(19). The Division has agreed that a 112(d) permit may be
issued, if all of the requirements of the Act are met, prior to completion of five successive
calendar quarters of groundwater sampling, with appropriate limitations on mining
activities which might potentially impact groundwater pending completion of all five
quarters of sampling.
(c) Detection Limits
Analytical detection limits and groundwater parameters are discussed in Section
6.4.20(12).
6.4.20(10) Surface Water Control and Containment Facilities Information
(a) Design Specifications
(i) Designated Chemical Storage
All chemicals will be stored in locked shipping (Zircon) containers at the bench
at May Day No. 1 or at the Base of Operations.
REVISED June 5, 2011
May Day Idaho Mine Complex 112(d) Permit Application
September 21, 2010
11
i
